To be honest if Portugal don’t make good improvement with their current performance and find good solutions for their midfield then I guess they will not move toward the cup at all and that will be a very big disappointment for Cristiano Ronaldo. He really mean business this period and he has shown and prove to work towards this World Cup but unfortunately the squad are lagging behind with their performances and that not a good idea.

I agree, that even he's one of the best. It's still a team sports that everyone will contribute to their win and goals. The odds for Portugal is too high against Spain and the bookies know it as well.

That's right, they will need to be at their best performance against Spain just as they did in the UEFA Nations League final. Some people are out there thinking Ronaldo is the reason why Portugal is not doing so well, they think he's too old to be playing but actually he's really been good in the Tournament so far. His touches and contributions are really good but some still want him to be the young Ronaldo at this age. A single player can't really do it all that's why I am dissapointed in other players that are supposed to be making it easy for Ronaldo.

At first we all thought the Midfield area will be their strength but it's actually their weakness. Bruno Fernandes has been the worst player , very silent through out the competition and Vitinha and Joao Neves are more focused on building up instead of attacking and creating chances.

With Nuno Mendes, Yamal might not do much but Portugal generally is not doing well right now so their chances of winning is low but it will be an interesting game as expected.

Ronaldo can still make his sprints with pace around 30km/h, that is very good at his age and surely it's unrealistic to ask him doing this like 20 times a match. Experienced player like Cristiano Ronaldo knows when is right time for using his energy and making such sprints for breaking opponent's defense system and offside trap.

Like in a latest match with Croatia, he made an excellent sprint, almost broke Croatia's offside trap, made a good first touch and scored a goal that was denied later. I see Cristiano Ronaldo is still very helpful for his team and is a truly dangerous striker against opponents of Portugal in World Cup 2026.

Your statement about Portugal midfield being weak is ironic considering this same Portugal midfield has won 2 UCL titles in 2 years. This same midfield has consistently topped  several world class midfields at club football. But now it's at the national team, they are severely underperforming. A lot of people don't say this but chemistry about players, teammates and around a team is very important. It's the exact reason why France is destroying all teams even though they have one of the worst midfield amongst the favourites. You look at Olise's chemistry with other France attackers when they're attacking and look at Portugal's, it's just sad. The problem isn't Ronaldo too because he has shown that if given the opportunity, he has ball control and above average shooting despite his age.

Maybe they'd wake up against Spain and fight for the quarter finals as a team?

In fact, I think the whole point is that these fantastic players haven't had enough time to develop a cohesive game.

Portugal has phenomenal stars on the team, but the problem is that their club coaches constantly come up with tricks or fake injuries to keep players out of away international games that matter little (like qualifiers). It's all quite logical... A player's presence at club matches in a given league is much more important to a coach than playing for the national team (it also guarantees the player won't get injured).

Yes, what you said is also true but in this World cup their midfield isn't good and I also agree that there's lack of good chemistry between players of Portugal. Let's say if in the match against Spain, they somehow improve their midfield once again then they could perform better and might win that match but if they keeping doing the same things that they've done in past matches of World cup then I don't think they'll stand a chance to win against Spain.

Portugal will have to rely on their defense in a match against Spain because it's not easy for Portugal to control the midfield against Spain. I know in theory, Portugal have very strong midfield with Vitinha, Neves and Bruno but these players don't have good chemistry with each other so far, and it's unrealistic to think they suddenly combine together well in this big match.

Spain can control the match, have high ball possession rate but if they can not score goal, they will have problems with Portugal that will likely use counter attacking tactic in this match. They have Ronaldo, Leao who can play very well with counter attacks. In UEFA Nations League final match, Portugal won against Spain.

Having good chemistry is really what Portugal lack in this world cup. Right from the start they have been struggling with performance not because they don't have quality players enough but because they don't have good understanding and communication among themselves that's why they are struggling.

They have one of the best midfield combination in the Tournament. Vitinha and Neves are the best duo in the champions league while Bruno Fernandes won premier league best player last season but still they are still not able to show anything. Against Spain they need to communicate well if not they will struggle. Spain also has a good midfield so it will be an interesting battle in the middle of Portugal midfield trio improve.

The match will interesting, especially since Portugal won against Spain in the their last meeting in the Nations League final.

I guess your expectations didn’t happen in such way. So bad seeing Portugal going home after their match against Spain. Despite the arrogant players in Spain but still Spain end up taking the lead and qualifying, it really so sad seeing  Ronaldo not having the proper squad for this World Cup and this is Ronaldo’s last World Cup ever because retirement is knocking on his door.

Spain won the match with 1:0 during the ending minutes and goal was scored by Mikel merino. I really wanted seeing Portugal qualifying and if possible winning this year worlds cup but the squad is not just ready at all and the players are not even making any impacts on the game at all.
But Ronaldo will always be a world great star ⭐️ always the GOAT (greatest of all time).
